A very involved but important report. I like it right from the title. Mobile, especially with the advent of the smart phone is the internet, afterall. Some seem to think of it as a different animal altogether.

Some highlights:

  • Wealth creation and destruction is material in new computing cycles.
  • We are now in the beginning of the 5th cycle. Tech cycles tend to last about 10 years.
  • Mobile is more than just phones. ‘Mobile’ being the key word.
  • Mobile is ramping faster than the desktop internet did and will be bigger than most think.
  • Video is driving rapid growth in mobile internet traffic.
  • If Skype were a carrier, it would be the largest in the world (521MM registered users).
  • Momentum favours the iPhone. Products with the most/best apps win.
  • Usage is about data. iPhone use is 45% voice.
  • When consumers are empowered by the internet, usage changes occur rapidly.
  • New business models are created during technology changes.
  • In place billing systems should create better monetization opportunities than the desktop internet did.
  • Rapid ramp of mobile internet usage: Some companies will win big, even massively, while many others will wonder what just happened.

Very thorough, but spot on. The world (including adverting) have really embraced mobile and seen its potential lot quicker and more organically than desktop internet usage in the beginning. It makes sense, since it is simply an extension of the internet, but its whole evolution has been incredibly fast tracked. That in itself always has its pros and cons, especially since internet social media and videos are still relatively new, but there is an optimism to mobile with all its convenience and hopefully relevance and individuality. Its going to be a wild ride as it continues, but the info in this report sounds as promising as I had hoped!
